Local databases maintained by consumer sync clients recording the files in a synchronised account, their state, and a bounded history of sync events.
Where it lives
Per-user application data directories — Dropbox keeps its databases under its own instance folder, and Google Drive for Desktop keeps SQLite metadata databases under a per-account folder in DriveFS
Name the location in the preservation request rather than describing the artifact in general terms. A request that asks for the record by its path is one the responding party can act on and one a court can enforce; a request for “all forensic evidence of dropbox and google drive sync databases” is neither.
What it records
Both clients maintain local metadata describing the synchronised namespace — file names, sizes, identifiers and whether content is held locally or streamed — and keep a bounded record of recent sync events such as additions, edits and deletions. Schemas change frequently between client versions, and some databases are encrypted with keys protected by the operating system's own credential store, so what is readable depends on the client version and on whether the acquisition captured the material needed to decrypt it.
What it proves — and what it cannot
These two panels carry equal weight, deliberately. The right-hand column is not a disclaimer: it is the specific, mechanical reason an inference fails, and it is the column opposing counsel will read back to a witness on cross-examination.
What it proves
FINDINGS THIS ARTIFACT WILL SUPPORT ON ITS OWN TERMS.
- That a personal cloud storage account was installed and signed in on a machine, and which account it was
- The file names and sizes in the synchronised namespace, including files no longer present
- Recent sync events with timing — additions, modifications and deletions within the window the client retains
- Whether files were held locally or streamed on demand, which determines whether the endpoint ever had the content
What it cannot prove
INFERENCES IT WILL NOT CARRY, HOWEVER STRONGLY IT POINTS.
- A complete transfer history. Event history in these clients is bounded and short, so it captures a recent window rather than an account's life
- That the endpoint held the content. Streaming modes in both products present files that live in the service, so presence in a listing is not presence on disk
- Anything, where the database is encrypted and the acquisition did not capture what is needed to decrypt it — a live or credential-aware collection may be required and cannot be recreated later
- Server-side sharing and access. Who else opened or downloaded a file is a provider-side record, obtainable only from the service and usually only by subpoena or account-holder consent
- That the schema means what a tool says it means. These formats are undocumented and change between client versions, so a parser's field labels are an interpretation to be validated
How the finding is attacked
An opinion built on this artifact meets these arguments. Each of them is answerable, and each of them is answered before the report is served rather than at a deposition.
- Showing the client version's schema differs from what the examiner's tool assumed
- Establishing that the bounded event history does not reach the period in dispute
- Arguing that streamed files were never on the endpoint
- Pointing out that provider-side records — the authoritative account of what was uploaded and shared — were never sought
What survives, and for how long
Local databases reflect current state and a short event window, and are removed when the account is unlinked or the client uninstalled — an unlink shortly before a device is surrendered erases most of the endpoint's copy. Provider-side records persist on the provider's own retention terms and are reachable only through the service.
More matters are decided by what an artifact never kept than by what it says, which makes preservation timing the most consequential decision in the matter — and it is usually made months before anyone examines anything. The evidence preservation deadline calculator works from the date you first anticipated litigation.
Questions counsel ask
Can you tell what someone uploaded to their personal Dropbox?
Partly, from the client's local databases, which record the names and sizes in the synchronised namespace and a bounded window of recent sync events. That window is short and the databases are reset when the account is unlinked. The authoritative record of what was uploaded and shared sits with the provider, and reaching it requires a subpoena or the account holder's cooperation.
Are Dropbox and Google Drive databases encrypted?
Some are, and the practical consequence is a collection question rather than an analysis one. Where a database is encrypted with a key protected by the operating system's credential store, a dead-box image alone may not be readable — a live or credential-aware collection can be required, and it cannot be recreated once the machine is returned. This has to be settled before acquisition, not after.
Does uninstalling a sync client destroy the evidence?
It destroys most of the endpoint's copy. Unlinking an account or uninstalling the client removes the local databases that describe the synchronised namespace and the recent event history. Traces of installation and execution usually remain — prefetch, application inventory, registry entries — and the provider-side record is untouched, which is frequently the better target once the endpoint has been cleared.
